Le Parc national des Écrins est l’un des dix parcs nationaux français avec la Vanoise, Port-Cros, les Pyrénées, les Cévennes, le Mercantour, la Guadeloupe, la Réunion, la Guyane et les Calanques.

Après la création éphémère d’un “parc national de la Bérarde” en 1913, il faut attendre 1973 pour la création officielle du Parc national des Écrins sous l’impulsion des alpinistes, des associations naturalistes et du Club Alpin Français.

Entre Gap, Grenoble et Briançon, le parc national des Écrins est délimité approximativement par les vallées de la Romanche au nord, de la Guisane et de la Durance à l'est et au sud, du Drac à l'ouest.

C'est un territoire de haute montagne dont la chaîne des principaux sommets structure l'ensemble du massif selon une architecture complexe qui culmine à 4 102 mètres à la Barre des Écrins.
